Non-Holo Rare is about someone who's reacting to change with a stubborn defiance, accepting themselves for what they are and the world for what they know it to be. In a way they're locking up to shut out pain, but they're also making a decision to pick their battles and not let other people's opinions bother them.

I found it interesting seeing different people's reaction to the trauma of the pandemic, and this song is inspired by the push and pull of those feelings. It's also a Pokemon card reference in that a non-holo rare card is a valuable card, but not as special as a holographic version of the same card. I thought that nicely fit this song's self-important yet knowingly flawed perspective.
